Hospitality Internships
Hospitality Program Update
Dear Interns,
Our goal is to create opportunities in the hospitality industry for your candidates and we cannot do this without your support and understanding
of the market.
Australian Internships is well aware that the changes in the market have caused delays with placements in the paid hospitality program.
We would like to take this opportunity to provide you with an update specifically on the Hospitality Program. We are aware that the change in the market requires changed processes if we wish to remain the market leader in Hospitality Internships in Australia.
Note: The Professional Internship Program is unpaid and we have no changes with this program.
The global economic crisis has impacted on the availability of full time paid positions. Many Australians have lost their jobs, and the hotels and resorts are currently giving priority to Australian applicants. The feedback provided by the majority of hotels and resorts indicates that they are continuing to offer roles, but they are not willing to agree to the minimum 30 hours per week that we have insisted on, for all interns previously.
We want to make sure that the major hotels and resorts continue to select our interns so we have clarified what was possible with Department of Immigration and they have confirmed that our Hospitality interns may still come into Australia as long as there is a minimum of 20 hours guaranteed on a weekly basis.
Hotels and resorts have confirmed that they are willing to consider
suitable candidates for the 12 month hospitality program as long as they
have the flexibility with hours and can go down to 20 hours when
necessary.
What are Australian Internships going to do NOW?
- We are going to identify those interns who are willing to complete a program where they accept a minimum 20 hours per week and promote them to our extensive network of hotels and resorts. See attached the email being sent to all existing unplaced hospitality applicants.
- We shall continue to market all of the applicants in our system to the hotels and resorts including those who advise that they cannot complete a program where there is only 20 hours of paid work per week guaranteed. We must advise that it may take us far longer to secure a suitable position due to the economic changes and limited full time roles.
- We are aware that some interns have academic requirements that call for more than 20 hours per week. Interns that have paid hours reduced to 20 per week may still have the option of doing extra hours in an unpaid capacity.
- Australian Internships will limit the number of applicants to those high quality candidates that are requested by the hotels and resorts.
